project 5 video

This is the final project for this class. I created this video in Windows Movie Maker from a howto youtube video and photoshop stills I made using a screen grab from the original video. The music is a portion of c.y.o.a. by heartsrevolution. super fun! I loved this class and learned a ton about the programs available for making art as well as formatting and the use of the internet as a tool. thank you for looking!

Ron English: taking back the media

Ron English is an agit-pop artist who uses subversive imagery and creates “illegal” posters to “liberate” corporate billboards. He is most known for his Abraham Obama poster where he merged the faces of Abraham Lincoln and Barack Obama.

assignment 6 metaphors in art

a metaphor is the comparison of two dissimilar things in a way that one represents the other. in writing, its simply a comparison without using like or as:  ”the world is a stage…” Just as writers do, artist use metaphors to make their work more interesting and thought provoking as well as heighten communication and immediacy.  birds are commonly  used to represent freedom and peace. these could be considered cliches, or  metaphors that are way overused.  Dali often used repeated images of crutches in his paintings which were his way of expressing the support for the inadequate as a part of life and death and based on Frued’s influence on Dali, probably had something to do with his mother…

I found a few clever examples of metaphors in social justice by Luba Lukova. here’s a link

project 1

poster2

For this project we were asked to create an 11 x 17 poster with a subversive message.  I took this photograph and the denver aquarium and really wanted to use it as my main image but stared at it for a week unable to see how to fulfill the assignment.  After playing around with photoshop for a bit and not getting anywhere, I started using Illustrator and found it was a little easier and more versatile for my ideas. I like the concept of a simple, contemporary design with one bright color offsetting black and white.  I used repetition of the image for visual interest and movement along with opacity adjustments and layering for depth.  The text is meant to evoke a mixed reaction in that float and purpose have been defined to be somewhat contrasting in meaning.  The message is tread lightly and buoyantly with some intent.  It can reflect humans in relation to the earth and our impact or  just for themselves as a sort of “encouragement” poster you might find hanging some conference room in Corporatetown, USA, but with a more zen-like approach.

Assignment #4 Analyze an Ad

ad2

This ad grabbed my attention with the contrasting bright red and white colors.  It’s for a waterproof phone and I really could care less about new gadgets but I thought the image was interesting.  The diagonal lines of the composition show movement and balance while the texture and value create three-dimensionality and form. Natural repetition occurs in the suction cups on the bottom of the tentacles and adds another interesting element to the design.  The context obviously simulates a hand and the water drops display and reinforce the waterproof function of the product. If I was in the market for a waterproof phone I would totally check this one out.  The artists use of color is fantastic and the digital imaging of the octopus is visually  interesting and seemingly  flawless.

Assignment #2 Reading Response

How does digital art/new media impact or relate to different aspects of our culture?

In the article Paul clearly shows the development and constant evolution of the digital medium as a tool for artists.  The very nature of any technology is based on change and the improvement of every aspect involved; this added to the creative process is an undoubtedly strong force. Just like the print press or the camera society has had to adjust to the positive and negative changes new media presents. As more and more artist use computers to alter, improve, and create work, the lines between what is handcrafted and what has been digitally manipulated become increasingly blurred.  We are forced to be wary of the “reality” of what the image is depicting as well as the authenticity of an image.  Computers have made information so readily accessible that we may be losing some integrity in the process of creativity.  In the article digital artist, Grahame Weinbren states that “the digital revolution is a revolution of random aceess.”  Anyone can download an image, tweak it in photoshop, and call it their own art; does this make it phony or diluted?   As far as aesthetics are concerned, the formal elements of design have been well defined and will determine the quality of digital art, but the wide availability of art and images could also allow room for new ideas and concepts that keep the medium fluid and interesting by opening it up to those that would not necessarily consider themselves creative. Instead of perfecting the skillful techniques of the master painters, new media is dependant upon experimenting.

New ideas in art can lead to progressive thinking in all aspects of culture.  Nancy Burson probably never thought the technology she used in Beauty Composites would be implemented in crime labs.  And in advertising digital technology has taken the ‘image consumer culture’ to new heights by increasing ‘manipulation, composting, and collaging. We see immediate replication of images as well as artistic response to socially events and issues.  One  of Shepard Fairey’s Obama prints were actually purchased as the official 2009 election poster and with much credit ado to the internet which helped spread the popularity of the image.  I recently heard on NPR that the louvre was preparing to exhibit graphic novel  illustration for the first time in history. This is a perfect example of new media finding it’s place in our culture as a respected and appreciated medium; even on par with the masters. Although new media may not have it’s place in the louvre quite yet  but I think it is important  that we embrace the use of computers and respect the medium as not only a tool, but also an opportunity to explore complteley new directions.
